Vancouver and the Rockies – July 2005

Every summer my family and I go on a vacation in our home country Canada. This summer we went to Vancouver, Calgary and the Rockies in Alberta.

Day 1 – June 30, 2005 – On the Way

We were excited to go to Vancouver. Mom called a taxi to the airport and Dad talked too much to the driver again. Our stinky Canjet flight was delayed, it had no TV, no free food and it smelled. To pass the time I read and played gameboy.

When we landed in Vancouver, we got our luggage and rented a Taurus and drove to a Pho restaurant. Then we drove to the beautiful Sheraton Wall Centre in downtown Vancouver. We got a room on the 25th floor which offered a magnificent view.

After resting for a while, we headed out to the shore that was gorgeous with many sea planes. We bought a good frappucino at a Starbucks. We wanted to go on the observation tower but it was closed. After that we walked to Gastown and went to see the steam clock and a statue of Gassy Jack – the ugly founder of Gastown.

We went through Chinatown or I should call “Bumtown” with lots of homeless and drunks. When we got back to Sheraton, I was hit by jet lag and went to sleep early while Mom and Alex went out for dinner at a Mongolian BBQ place.

Day 2 – July 1, 2005 – Canada Day

Today we had a simple breakfast with muffins and coffee at the Starbucks at the hotel and headed to Canada Place to celebrate Canada Day in Vancouver. There were many fun activities at Canada Place such as Lumber Jack, tepees, different exhibits and free samples of food.

We took a seabus to North Vancouver and had lunch at Lonsdale Quay market which was touristy and crowded with people as it was a holiday. After returning from the North shore, we drove to famous Vancouver’s Stanley Park – named after Lord Stanley who donated the first trophy to the NHL and that was why it was called the Stanley cup. We took a free trolley around the park and it was beautiful. We stopped at the Totem Poles, the Hollow Tree and Prospect Point where we had a gorgeous view. We ate at a restaurant with a view of the Lion Gates Bridge.

Day 3 – July 2, 2005

The next day, Mom, Dad and I went swimming at the hotel. Alex was too lazy to go. We swam laps and Mom sneaked away to the sauna.

First we visited the Vancouver Aquarium and saw many interesting sea creatures. The Baluga whales show was my favorite.

Then we headed out to North shore to visit a suspension bridge. It was high above the ground and it was scary. We hiked around the park and felt very relaxed. Next we drove to Cyprus park and hiked to Yew Lake. The lake was very beautiful with lily pads and was surrounded by endless pine trees. We really enjoyed the peaceful and scenic hike in the park trails. I thought we heard a bear.

Then we went back to hotel to freshen up before heading out for dinner at a nearby Thai restaurant. The food was good but spicy for me. Dad also talked too much to the waitress and said that I was a Thai boy to embarrass me. We walked back leisurely to the Sheraton and called it the night.

Day 4 – July 3, 2005

Today we went swimming again. I tried the sauna but did not like it, it was not relaxing. We drove to Chinatown to eat Dim Sum at a restaurant called Pink Pearl. It was not too bad but not as good as Toronto Dim Sum.

After that we went to the Museum of Anthropology to check out the Totem Poles and First Nations Arts. It had many interesting totem poles and arts but must be boring for Dad because he was dozing off on a bench. We stopped by a beach to have hot dogs for lunch and do some people watching. I fed the hungry sea gulls. The view was very nice with many sail boats and people sun bathing. I tried salmon candy which was not really good.

We then drove to a Vietnamese market where Dad bought grapes and apples. Next we drove back to Richmond and checked into the Sandman Hotel. I won us 30% off for our next stay with my lucky finger.

We drove to Steveston dock which was a historic fishing village and offered whale watching tours and the best Fish and Chips in the world. We ate the most memorable Fish and Chips ever, it was made from fresh Halibut and Salmon. We also bought a small sail boat for souvenir.

We also went to a Buddha temple which is the largest Buddhist temple in Canada. The temple was very nice with many Buddha statues and a nice garden. We met a nun who was very nice and let us in before the temple was closed. I felt sorry because she shaved her hair.

After a full day, we went back to the Sandman Hotel for a good night sleep.

Day 5 – July 4, 2005 – Victoria

Today we would go to Victoria by ferry. So we woke up early and had breakfast at the hotel’s restaurant called Maxies. Dad took forever so we could not get to the ferry on time and had to wait for the next one. We parked the car in the queue for the ferry and went into a plaza to e mail Erik. Then we drove our car into the ferry. When the ferry set sail I explored and played a lot in the arcade, it was fun. Mom bought me Archie, a comic book.

When we got to Victoria, we drove to Traveler’s Inn, and OK hotel. It had internet. We took a shuttle bus to downtown Victoria. We went to the harbour, visited the Parliament building and the Empress hotel – a fancy 5* hotel for the Queen. We went to Miniature World, a cool place with models of famous attractions. It was fantastic.

After that we took a long walk back to Traveler’s Inn where we got our car and drove to the Butchard Gardens – a beautiful and famous garden in Victoria. We first walked to the Sunken Garden, then the Ross Fountain which would be nicer at night time. Next we ate at a café at the entrance. We then went to the Rose Garden which has so many different and gorgeous roses. After that we relaxed and enjoyed a music show with a string quartet who sounded great. After the show we went to the Japanese Garden. We then drove back to the hotel to sleep.

Day 6 – July 5, 2005 - Victoria

Today we would leave Victoria. In the morning we went to a café and ate bagels and eggs. After that we checked out and drove to the Museum of British Columbia. It had interesting artifacts. There were lifesize models of Victoria back in time. Dad almost slept through. After leaving the museum, we ate at the Old Spaghetti Factory and it tasted good. We took the ferry back to Vancouver and I got another Archie.

We then drove back to the Sandman hotel with the 30% off. We went to a Chinese restaurant for hot pot and it was great. Dad had Vancouver crabs. After the good meal we went back to the hotel while Mom and Dad return our car to the airport and picked up a cool, big, strong and red SUV for our road trip to the Rockies tomorrow.

Day 7 – July 6, 2005 – Whistler, Kamloops

Today, we started to head off in our SUV to Alberta. We ate breakfast at a stinky café along the way that served yucky food. We headed off again with Dad’s crazy driving. The view was very beautiful on the mountainous road and there was snow on the top of the mountains.

After about two hours we reached Whistler, a ski resort. We left Dad to sleep in the car and explored the town. We saw a chairlift to the top of the mountain, but Mom did not let us get on. We saw ads for the 2010 Vancouver winter Olympics as Whistler was preparing for that. We found the Market Place and ate at McDonald’s.

We returned to the car, woke up Dad and were on our way again. The drive was very scenic and deserted, sometimes we were the only car on the street. There were steep hills making Mom nervous.

Finally we stopped at a small town called Kamloops to spend the night. We checked in a small motel where Alex and I had our own room. Then we went to bed.

Day 8 – July 7, 2005 – Golden

After having bagels for breakfast at a café next door, we went off again. The scenery was very beautiful but the roads were winding and bumpy. After a long drive, we reached Golden, a town at the border between British Columbia and Alberta.

We found a motel with spectacular view of the mountains called Motor Inn. The room was spacious but there were moths. We went out to buy some supplies and ate pizza at the hotel’s restaurant. Then we went to the pool and there was a fun slide. Dad and I got stuck on it. We figured that we had to go on our bellies. Then we went to our room and went to sleep.

Day 9 – July 8, 2005 – Kicking Horse River

Today we would go white water rafting on the Kicking Horse River. We went to the office of the rafting company and were driven by bus to the river. We had to put on a wet suit, boots, a jacket and a helmet. We were given an introduction and instructions on safety. We went on a level 1 rafting where the river was calm and there were small waves. We only got splashed once. We learned that if you fall out of the boat, don’t stand up, lie on your back instead so that your feet don’t get stuck in the rocks. There were more and better waves down the river but we were not allowed to go because we were too young. The scenery along the river was very beautiful with pine trees and mountains. We were dropped off, served hamburger for lunch and driven back to the hotel and on the way we saw many bighorn sheep on the mountain.

Then we drove to a trail for hiking. We could hear the sound of water falls thundering at the end of the trail. We had to leave because there were too many mosquitoes attacking us. We continued on to the Emerald Lake which is a beautiful green lake and it was drizzling so we had to leave. Next we went to a natural bridge over the Yoho River. Finally we went to a big water fall with many screeching squirrels.

We then returned to Golden and ate at a small Chinese restaurant that offered “mall” type food and got our orders wrong. When we returned to the hotel, Dad and I found a hockey table game that was so much fun. Then we went to bed.

Day 10 – July 9, 2005- Jasper

We skipped breakfast this morning and drove straight to Lake Louise. It was crowded with tour buses. The lake was beautiful and was surrounded by snow capped mountains in the background. There was a historic hotel called Lake Louise Chateau Frontenac. It was very fancy with doormen dressed in Swiss costume opening the door for us. We then took the Lake Louise gondola to the top and saw a grizzly bear that made everybody excited. At the top, it was cold but had a great view of Lake Louise. When we got back from the gondola we ate at a yucky buffet there.

We continued our drive to Jasper. On the way we were treated with non stop spectacular views of the snow capped Rocky Mountains and many beautiful blue lakes. There was also a long hike to a canyon.

When we reached Jasper we checked into our hotel and headed out to eat pizza which was just OK. Then we drove around town looking at more nice sceneries before going back to bed.

Day 11 – Jul 10, 2005 – Banff

We ate breakfast at our hotel and checked out to leave Jasper and headed to Banff.

On the way, we stopped many times to see amazingly blue lakes and glaciers. We saw many elks and deer eating grass near the roads. When we reached Banff we checked into a Best Western hotel and walked to a restaurant that served delicious fondues made from beef, wild boar, deer and buffalo. After that we walk around the touristy town buying some souvenirs and magnets. Then we took a long walk back and went to sleep.

Day 12 – July 11, 2005 - Banff - Calgary

We woke up late and missed the buffet breakfast the Best Western. There were only muffins and croissants left for us. Then we drove to the Banff Gondola to go up the Sulphur Mountain for the best view in Banff. It was so high, it was as if we could see the whole world from there. We took a long trail with a lot of stairs. The scenery was breathtaking. We could see the surrounded mountains, lots of goats and squirrels. It was drizzling when we got down.

Next we headed for boring Calgary. When we arrived, we checked into another Best Western and went out to look for Vietnamese food. We found a small Vietnamese plaza and ate at a restaurant called “Noodle World” which served so-so food. After that we went to Wal-mart to buy a new memory stick for the camera and Dad bought himself a cowboy hat as it was fashionable in Calgary during the Stampede.

Then we went to downtown Calgary to go up the red Calgary Tower – a wannabe of the CN Tower. We had a good view of Calgary from the top of the tower. We could spot the Saddle Dome from there. The Petro Canada Building however is taller. Next we went to the Bow River for a walk where the geese attacked me. Calgary city was very boring and looked dead after office hours. After all that we went back to the hotel and watched the movie “Beauty Shop” with Queen Latifah and it was OK.

Day 13 – July 12, 2005 – Calgary Stampede

Today is the opening of the Calgary Stampede and the hotel offered a special “cowboy” breakfast serving pancakes. Calgary Stampede is a 10-day festival event that is held every year in Calgary and is the world largest outdoor rodeoAfter breakfast, we drove to the Stampede Park which was very crowded. We parked very far and walked to the stadium.

A lot of people were dressed in cowboys outfits and hats.At the stampede we headed for the Grandstand Stadium where the rodeo was held. We passed by the Saddle Dome and a barn where there were agricultural competitions. We saw from peculiar looking lamas. At the rodeo, there were cool events such as the bull riding, bare back riding, cattle tie down, steer wrestling, poly races and so on. All of it was very exciting, especially the cattle tie down.

After the rodeo, we went to an Indian Village with many teepees set up as how Indian people live. We saw an Indian dancing show with RCMPs whom we took pictures with. We ate some hamburgers and got last minute tickets to the Chuckwagon race and the TransAlta fireworks. The wagon races were awesome and after that there was a big show to celebrate Alberta’s 200 th birthday. It was wicked with singers, musicians, dancers, acrobatics, comedians and ended with spectacular fireworks. The fireworks were the best I ever seen.

We were exhausted when the long and fun day at the Calgary Stampede ended. We headed back to the hotel and went straight to bed.

Day 14 – July 13, 2005- Calgary Zoo – Home

Today was the last day of our vacation. We chose to visit the Calgary Zoo. We first went to the (plastic) Dinosaurs which looked very fake. The monkeys at the Primate House were cool. After that at the Canadian Wilderness area, we saw elks, goats, sheep, moose, caribou, and so on. They were all fascinating. Next we went to Africa, there were lions, giraffes, hippos, zebras and lots more, it was awesome. Last we visited Australia, we saw kangaroos, bats, crocodiles and so on. We had freezies and ice cream before we left the zoo.

We said our goodbyes to Vancouver and Alberta and went to the airport. We returned the rental car and took a West Jet flight back to Toronto. It was great to get home. Our vacation was filled with excitement, joys and great sceneries. Our vacation may be over, but we know that we will set off again to more adventures.
